But the non-winners get placed as well but they are not placed on the premier pages.

These are good directories in a way because if you have the highest bid they you will be placed in a spot where thousands and thousands of people will see it. People new to the website game will want to have their sites highly visible so they can begin to direct traffic to their site. Basically you will get a great a spot in a great directory. Once you win a spot you will likely increase your traffic. You have to make sure you have a site that makes people want to come back.
